As an adult who has just recently returned to the world of camping (I am a leader in my son’s cub scout pack), I looked at LOTS of options before choosing the Coleman Montana 8 person sized. I checked out reviews on Amazon and CampMor, and talked to as many camping enthusiast friends as I could. My first year in scouting, I borrowed a Eureka for 2-person from our local boy scout troop, which came up to (maybe) my waist, and just barely fit my full-sized air mattress. After struggling to change clothing while lying down (I could barely kneel, let alone stand), and suffering through a fairly sleepless/stuffy night in the Eureka , I decided that the following features were necessary for comfortable camping:
1. The ability to stand up fully. This meant that any type I chose had to have a center height of at least 72″, preferably more (my husband is 6 feet tall, and if I ever want him to join us camping, it needs to work for him too. The Montana 8 has a center height of 84″ (7 feet).
2. Room for gear and at least two full/queen sized air mattresses. Although the Montana 8 states that there’s room for 8 people, the diagram shows these 8 people sleeping in mummy bags very close together. From a comfort perspective, this will hold 4-5 people (and their gear) at a maximum, without feeling overly crowded. For the three of us, this fits the bill nicely………..

For the price, the size of this is massive. Family of five was able to get a queen and a full in there with plenty of room to store our gear and walk around. The color-coded poles makes it pretty easy to assemble. By myself, from unzipping the carrying bag to walking inside was about 15 minutes. It should be noted however, that I didn’t use the instructions. While researching this type, many of the review videos were also assembly videos, so I already had a grasp as to what goes where and how. It does require a little patience as the main rod across the top could be troublesome for one person. Two people can easily do it in under 10 minutes. As with all types, make sure the rods are evenly spaced within the sleeves or you’ll risk snapping them.
We also caught a pretty good rainstorm during our trip. A 10 minute downpour from a storm that was just under severe limits due to wind (no hail).It held up pretty good. It shook a lot, but we never got wet and it wasn’t damaged. The last we had in the exact same spot, the wind pulled up some the stakes and it collapsed…………..

Love this big, roomy and easy up. The straight wall feature gave it that extra height to stand up in where most don’t. Went camping for a month and it rained daily. It withstood really high winds and stayed dry throughout our trip. Was a little nervous about the reviews, but took a chance and really happy!
We immediately bought larger metal stakes and a ground tarp. Follow the directions and use the rainfly because it is part of the structure. We were concerned about the top being mesh and water getting under the rain fly, but it didn’t, has enough overhang to prevent that. The mesh top allowed greater ventilation, (make sure to get it even on both front and back) but we do not recommend taking the rainfly off for stargazing, because without this it is not as stable and would not hold up in windy situations……..

It doesn’t look large, but there is plenty of room inside. The shape makes it look low profile, and small, but my guy is 6’5″ and he can lay flat. It is about the size of a queen mattress inside, and room on the sides for gear. It really does pop up and come down in less than a minute. Very Sturdy. We wanted to see if it was really water proof, so we put it up, and ran a hose in a fountain over it for a little bit, and found no leaks, all the materials are good quality. It fits back into its storage bag easily, which doesn’t happen often, and the storage bag doesn’t take up a lot of room. I wouldn’t use it as a backpacking one, as it is around 10 pounds, but for camping trips and festivals. Well worth the price. And a bonus is it is basically a 3 in 1 type, as you can pull the outside part off it, and just have a mesh one, or just an open air sun shade, or keep it as is as a well ventilated type. I can’t imagine a better one for under $100. The only con is no instructions, but I didn’t need them. Lay it out, straighten out all poles, and once that is done, take the top piece, and separate the bars, and it is all nice and tight. Take down starts with pushing the top piece bars back together, and folding it up. They snap in place, so you have to unsnap them to fold it up.

It is very easy to build, but it is also sturdy. It doesn’t feel like those that are about to fly when some wind picks up. It is big enough for two people with plenty of extra space, and we also liked to flexibility that the front porch provides. We went for a bright color (orange/yellow) that we think looked cool.
