These small electronic devices could be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.

Buying Guide To Consider Personal Locator Beacons

By considering these factors when shopping for a personal locator beacon, you can choose a device that meets your needs and provides added peace of mind when venturing into remote or hazardous environments.

Absolutely! Registering your PLB with the appropriate authorities is crucial in ensuring a timely and effective response in the event of an emergency. This information allows search and rescue teams to quickly identify you and your emergency contacts and dispatch help to your location.

Registering your PLB with the appropriate authorities

Keeping your PLB up to date with the latest firmware updates is also important as it ensures that your device is functioning properly and is compatible with the latest satellite technology. This can help improve the accuracy and speed of location data transmission and increase the chances of a successful rescue.

PLB up to date & compatible with the latest satellite technology

In addition to these important considerations, some PLBs may also come with additional features like two-way messaging or navigation assistance, which can be useful in emergency situations. However, it’s important to remember that these features may come at an additional cost and may require a subscription or other ongoing fees.

Two-way messaging

When choosing a PLB, it is important to consider factors such as Type of Beacon, Battery Life, Durability, Size and Weight, and additional features like two-way messaging, Activation Method, Cost. It is also important to register your PLB with the appropriate authorities and keep it up to date with the latest firmware updates.

Type of Beacon:

There are different types of them are available in the market such as GPS-enabled, non-GPS enabled, and hybrid models. GPS-enabled beacons provide accurate location information, whereas non-GPS models rely on triangulation from nearby satellites to determine your location. Hybrid models combine both GPS and non-GPS technology to provide the best possible location accuracy.

Battery Life:

The battery life of a PLB is an important consideration, as it determines how long the device can transmit a signal in an emergency situation. Be sure to check the battery life and consider how long you will be away from civilization before needing to recharge or replace the batteries.

Durability:

PLBs are designed to be used in tough outdoor conditions, so it’s important to choose a device that is durable and able to withstand exposure to water, extreme temperatures, and rough handling.

Size and Weight:

They come in different sizes and weights, so choose a device that is lightweight and compact enough to carry comfortably while hiking or participating in other outdoor activities.

Activation Method:

Some PLBs require manual activation, while others have an automatic activation feature that triggers when the device is submerged in water or experiences a significant impact. Consider which type of activation method is best suited for your needs and preferences.

Cost:

They can vary widely in price, so it’s important to choose a device that fits within your budget. However, keep in mind that investing in a high-quality, reliable device is a worthwhile investment in your safety and wellbeing.

Ultimately, when choosing the best one, it’s important to carefully consider your needs and the types of activities you will be participating in. By doing so, you can choose a device that is best suited to your specific situation and provides the peace of mind and safety you need while enjoying the great outdoors.

First off, sorry, this turned into a bit of a monster write up, but I thought it important to give a bit of background info. This all happened a while back, I just never got around to writing a review.

Anyhow, my partner and I are both keen walkers who do quite a bit of mixed walking/hiking around the UK including lowland as well as a fair bit up in the fells/mountains around the usual suspects in the Brecons, Snowdonia and the Lake District. After checking my phone on the odd walk and seeing no signal I wondered to myself what would happen if the sh1t hit the fan.. I’m one of those boring types who always carries a good first aid kit (mainly trauma type (think big dressings and a tourniquet) rather than plasters and savlon, in the hope that if I needed to I could hopefully keep someone alive, rather than treating them for a nettle sting. So after much “umming” and “ahhhhing” I decided to splash out and buy the inreach mini……

S. Jones Says

I do a lot of solo camping, hiking and remote offroading. I know solo is not the safest thing but it is what it is. Bought this and used on a recent trip where I was off-grid for 72 hours and 20 miles from cell signal. Worked great, I was able to allow my family to follow me on routes leaving GPS breadcrumbs for them as well as send up to 20 text messages before a 50 cent per message charge kicked in. For $26 the breadcrumbs were unlimited and custom text was limited to 20. We only texted back and forth 4-5 times.

Accuracy great. Battery life superb. I had it on from 7am to 10pm each day and still had 80% power at the end of my trip with no recharging during the trip…..

I opted for the slightly more expensive version..PLB 425 ..it has a nice screen that gives you instant acknowledgement the unit is on and working. (I have only tested it – not actually activated it) Comes with a carrying case ..you can attach to your belt or Velcro loop to something. I ordered mine from Orbital Satcom corp..an outfit from the United Kingdom. My first unit had an issue with the labels – the date of manufacture was missing (thus I was unable to register it with ACR for the warranty. After contacting both Orbital Satcom and ACR..i was sent a new unit…problem solved. Check your label on the box and the unit itself.. make sure date of manufacture is on there.

Allen G Says

I see a number of negative reviews on this device. I had one of the first gen Spot messengers that I ditched for the Garmin Inreach (which does have a number of advantages over Spot–complete global coverage being one of them). I just downgraded my Inreach plan and picked up a Spot X. So far I’m glad I did.

First, this is important to understand: it’s a satellite device. You really have to be outside in order for it to work reliably. It looks like people are picking these up expecting them to be some sort of everywhere-Blackberry’ish device. It’s not. But it’s close enough such that, properly configured, it will give people a way to reach you (and you them) in a semi-reasonable amount of time. It also does a stellar job of tracking and reporting your outdoor location…..

The SPOT X is best for outdoor enthusiasts who engage in activities such as hiking, camping, and hunting. It’s also ideal for people who work in remote areas such as oil rigs, mining sites, and research stations. If you’re looking for a reliable and durable one with two-way messaging capabilities, then the SPOT X is the perfect choice for you.

Pros

  • Global Coverage

Maintenance and testing: PLBs should be regularly tested and maintained to ensure they are in good working order. This might include testing the battery, checking the device for damage, and updating the registration information.

False alarms: False alarms from PLBs are not uncommon, and can be caused by accidental activation or equipment malfunction.
